It wasn't a single, defining moment that led Beverly Baker to pursue
a music career. "Music is just something I've always done. My family
has always made music. I guess you could say it runs in my blood."
Born in Maple Hill, KS, Beverly Baker spent her childhood
surrounded by the grass-roots honky-tonk and pure-Americana
gospel that defined the Midwest. Beverly's mom remembers
her "[loving] the spotlight from the beginning", often holding
"concerts" for her family and the neighborhood children. She
would sing at family gatherings, church, just about anywhere you'd let her.
Beverly soon added school and community musical theater
productions to her repertoire.
Her love of Broadway-style theater took her to Chicago where
Beverly's passion for music began to find direction. In addition to
studying theater arts and opera, Beverly was introduced to, and
captivated by, the blues and jazz that permeated Chicago's nightlife.
She continued gaining experience, performing with the District 425 Players
and the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company of Chicago. She was also the
popular female half of "The Compliments", a Chicagoland area Top 40 act.
In addition, Beverly was the business director and lead alto for
the University of Chicago's only Christian acapella group, Make
A Joyful Noise (MaJ'N). With MaJ'N, Beverly got her first look at
the business side of the music business and had the opportunity
to travel across the country performing for audiences from Vegas
to Vermont. MaJ'N also gave Beverly her first experience in a
recording studio as they recorded their first album "Wadin' in
the Water."
It was during those recording sessions, that Beverly's solo career
began. Chicago-based producer Keith Uchima encouraged Beverly to
get her voice on tape. She worked side by side with Keith to
produce her first demo. That demo caught the eye (and ear) of
Nashville-based producer Johnny Pierce at Cedar House Productions
in the fall of 1998. Beverly teamed up with Pierce and his brother
Billy to create her first independent solo album. "Can You Hear Me Now"
is an exciting blend of Chicago jazz, blues and rock-and-roll
woven throughout a solid foundation of traditional country music
to create a sound that is uniquely Beverly Baker.
Beverly has been living in the Nashville area for the last few years.
She has travelled the country promoting her new album and singing
'just about anywhere [they] let her', including: local clubs, festivals,
studios and concert halls.
